Childlink Postpones School Play

For the first time in 19 years, Childlink has had to postpone its largest annual student activity: the Childlink School Play.

Last Friday, March 13, 2020, was a sad day for the Linkers when the school administration had to announce that it was heeding the call of Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella to completely suspend classes for the school year. The news was received with shock and one question immediately turned up in everyone’s mind: “What would happen to the school play?”

This year, Childlink was set to hold “Kultura: A Celebration of the Eight Subcultures that Shape the Filipino Nation” on March 21, 2020, at the Guang Ming Institute of Performing Arts. The play, which was in the format of a variety show, intends to highlight the colorful aspects of the Filipino culture and history, and allow its audience to witness songs and dances to folk music, kundimans, Filipino pop music, and so on. However, because of the announced class suspension, it has been postponed indefinitely.

The School Play has become a tradition for everyone in the Childlink community. It’s the most highspirited and most fun time of the year. Everyone gets to have a short break from classes in a day to cultivate their talents for music and performing arts. There’s a lot of practice that goes into every performance but it’s still so much fun because students also have more opportunities to make friends with students from other year levels.

All those weeks of hard work and practice leading up to two performances on the stage are the most enjoyable times for students and teachers alike. It doesn’t even matter if the production ends up looking like a broadway show or not because there Mommy and Daddy are in the audience with Lolo and Lola and they’re smiling and watching and the Linkers there up on stage, smiling and performing the best they can in their colorful costumes. To any Linker, it really is the best experience. To have it taken away, even indefinitely caused a lot of heartbreak. But it had to be done in order to keep our tight-knit community safe from the looming danger of COVID-19. Despite the need though, there really was scarcely a dry eye as everyone was forced to abruptly say their goodbyes for the summer.

Unfortunately, there is still no set date yet for the staging of our annual school play. Just be sure to keep posted, Linkers! Stay safe at home and continue to pray for better news in the days ahead.
